Angles of Granny Smith

Description

I've never seen a Granny Smith before, but if you have please send me a link because I would very much love to see it! Granny Smith is an old fashioned gal, much too frail to do any hard farm work anymore, but she still does plenty of baking in the kitchen including making her famous Zap Apple Jam <3 I've noticed that most folk from the older generations pick a style they like and never change, no matter how many years pass to make their outfit look out of date. If you remember the episode where Granny Smith tells the story of her Discovery of Zap Apples when she was young (and thus the founding of Ponyville itself) she is very much a Frontier woman, and I wanted her outfit to reflect that. The skirt was originally an all white rodeo yoke skirt with gold rope embellishments I found at Goodwill Thrift store. I used my seam ripper to remove the unwanted flair, then used Apple Green Rit dye to color the skirt. The Apron is a simple design, you don't really need a pattern, just look at some pics on the internet, and draw a pattern yourself on some newspaper (cut 2 of fabric but not for sash part). I used a light green checkered material from Walmart (it's like, $3.00 per yard) and some fusible interfacing I had laying around. The green ruffles were made from a straight green blanket binding (also from Walmart) that I did a long straight stitch on and pulled tight to gather and ruffle, then sewed inside the 2 pieced of the apron fabric to prevent fraying. Just like Big Mac, Granny Smith's Cutie mark was a pic I found using google search, then printed on iron on transferable fabric. Those classy looking (steampunkish/victorian style) lace up country boots? I hope you're sitting down for this, because they only cost me $14.99! (Savers Thrift Store, they run a little more expensive than GoodWill, but you will find higher quality items, sometimes even things that were hardly or never used!) You can say it, I am the Goddess of Thrift Store Finds ;-p My main concern was Granny Smith's iconic Shawl as it is her most recognizable feature (you have AppleBloom's bow, Big Mac's yoke, Apple Jack's Hat, and Granny Smith's Shawl.) That particular print just does not exist. So I got some cheap yellow fabric, hemmed it twice to prevent fraying, studied pics of Granny Smith close ups and using an index card, drew and cut out an apple stencil that I thought would be a comparable size to the apples on Granny's shawl. Then, using red and green fabric markers, I drew on each apple by hand. Finally, I sewed on the fabric lace trim, making sure not to extend it all the way because for some reason the Artists of the show didn't draw lace on the knot. I was in a time crunch so I did not sew the blouse myself, I also couldn't find a pattern I liked even if I did have the time, and despite searching 7 different thrift stores, I could not find a blouse that was satisfactory (I admit that I have high standards on certain things) So this lovely blouse (known as a Kate blouse) came from a store called Blanche's Place and they make beautiful vintage clothing in various colors and sizes. I was going to get the wig from Party City but all they had was gray and Granny Smith's hair is clearly white... Luckily, a local mom & pop costume shop had just what I was looking for. It was $10 more than what the wigs at Party City cost, but it is worth it because it is higher quality (less likely to get frizzy or come undone) and the color is character accurate which is very important to me. Finally we come to the ears. Because of her age, Granny Smith's ears droop and hang more on the sides of her head, so polymer clay was not an option. Luckily and as always, I had some light green craft foam laying around that I attached to 2 bendy hair clips. It's as simple as that.
